Georgian government has brought a new life to Mestia through investing significant recourses for rehabilitation and improvement of general municipal and national infrastructure. The overall goal of the rehabilitation works is converting Mestia in a year around destination by developing outstanding ski resort and summer outdoor related activities. The remarkable fact about Mestia is that it features all outdoor mountain sports like climbing, mountaineering, trekking, white water rafting, kayaking, paragliding. This place has its unique ethnography, nature and culture.
In the frames of Mestia development project the city centre and road between Zugdidi-Mestia have been rehabilitated, the new street lights installed and communal infrastructure improved. The extension of road rehabilitation program is planned to achieve highest villages. As part of the project international airport has been constructed in Mestia. The flights are operated by “Kenn Borek Air” a Canadian airline company. Roundtrip to Mestia costs 150 GEL and airplane departs from Tbilisi International Airport.
The new ski cable way constructed by Leitner-Poma Inc. with the length of 2600 metres is in place serving two ski trails with difficulty levels-Difficult and Sport Style. The new cable service capacity is 1000 persons per hour.
Georgian National Tourism Agency has already opened information centre in Mestia providing all the necessary information for local and international visitors. Tourists are receiving advice on transportation, food and accommodation, various skiing services, guided tours and other travel related issues. Three big hotels and 30 Guest houses are operating in Mestia offering visitors good service and ensuring enjoyable leisure time.
The winter season is already open and visitors have a unique opportunity to discover Svaneti – Treasure of Caucasus at the same time exploring new skiing opportunities, Celebrate Christmas and New Year in a beautiful natural setting and see much more that Svaneti offers.
