According to amendments in law “On Wine and Vine”, adopted today by the Parliament in third hearing, before April 2012 the winemaking from original varieties of grape (holding the name of place of its origin) is permitted out of their harvesting zone, but only within Georgian borders.


Amendments, initiated by Murman Kuridze, a member of the Agrarian Committee, define the authority of Samtrest, department of wine and vine, as regulating body, as well as the terms of vinery care, wine production and realization, wine names registration, wine certification and issues, related to fight against wine adulteration.


According to the amendments, wine, named after the place of its origin, is subject to the compulsory certification, while for the rest it will be voluntary process.


Exporter should inform Samtrest department about aim to export wine, bearing the name of place of origin, 3 days earlier. The department will make decisions on laboratory testing of wine probes.


Samtrest conducts registration of wines, named after the provenance, on the place of their producing and storing. Registration should be carried out in accordance with state of January 1 after the vintage.
